At the heart of acne is the button - a plug of fat, skin and keratin. When opened, the cap called a blackhead, closed, a Whitehead. Often seen in the face, chest and back acne is caused by several factors, including hormones. To help control it, keep oily areas clean and do not squeeze the buttons (it can cause infections and scarring). Only three drugs have proven effective for treating acne: benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, and antibiotics.
